Carl Antonson
1906-1909
As always at vacancies the church wondered who to call to take up the work in this important field. The call was extended to Rev. Carl Antonson, who accepted and commenced his pastorate October 7th, 1906. He was a fluent speaker, readily heard, drawing multitudes to the meetings and many into the membership of the church. In the spring of 1909, the church was entirely remodeled, at which time a wing was added to one side and the steeple changed and roll-up doors installed between the addition and the auditorium. Dedication of the new house of worship took place in July, when among other pastors, Victor Hedberg was invited to speak. At this time the church changed its name from the “First Scandinavian Baptist Church” to the “First Swedish Baptist Church.” The Michigan State Conference held its meeting here during 1908, and the Swedish Baptist General Conference of America held its annual meeting in the church in 1909. After three years of very successful work with the church, Rev. Antonson resigned October 15th, 1909, to accept a call to the Central Baptist Church in St. Paul.
